When a client asks for a test render, most freelancers say yes without thinking twice.
It feels like the right move.
You show goodwill, lower the barrier, prove yourself.
Maybe this time it leads somewhere.
But when a client asks for a test, they're telling you something.
They looked at your portfolio and it didn't fully convince them.
Not because your work is bad.
But because they couldn't see themselves in it clearly enough to commit.
That's a portfolio problem.
And a free test render doesn't fix a portfolio problem.
It just lets both of you avoid the real conversation a little longer.
The better move is to name it directly.
Something like: "I don't do unpaid test renders, but let me pull three pieces that are closest to what you're describing and walk you through how I'd approach your project."
You're showing capability without working for free.
And you're having the kind of conversation that actually leads somewhere.
